The humor of this award-winning Dutchman may strike Americans as rather European, but his clear, limpid art is wholly childlike in its appeal. When Frog feels both happy and sad, and his heart beats curiously fast, his friend diagnoses his ailment: he's in love. But with whom? Frog hasn't considered that, but leaps to the conclusion that it's the white duck--despite their color difference. He plies her with presents, but they don't become actual friends until--practicing his jumping to impress her--he falls and she cares for him. There's a good deal of wisdom lurking in the disarming dialogue here; the illustrations are charmingly good. humored and well suited to group sharing.
