KIRKUS REVIEW

The father of the late Janice Wylie (whom he refrains from mentioning) and author of The Gift of Janice (p. 709-1964) here warns every ""young women of whatever background and whatever present aspiration"" that ""leaving the nest"" is dangerous and the city hostile, tricky, and complex. He gives earnest, detailed recommendations which cover first visit to the city, on to settling in, selecting roommates, sizing up an apartment and a neighbourhood, and protective devices of all kinds. There are also remarks on the right kind of behavior (non-provocative), and directives for the prospective unwed mother and the professional organizations to which she can turn.... Admonitory advice which has had its most pointed and poignant proof in his own experience. Report repeated in full from p. 927.
