A colorful novel of Florida, that tells of 'Glades crackers, the jungle, swamps, clannish ways that churn trouble, written in picturesque, rowdy speech, with excellent handling of incidents. It is the story of Jude and Cynthia, ignorant of their mutual love. It is the story, too, of the swamp Doc who tries to play God, who saves Cynthie's husband of a murder charge, and earns Jude's and his brother Beau's enmity in the process. But for Cynthie's happiness, he manoeuvers as best he can. Jude foreswears cattle rustling, and with the hurricane, saves Cynthie. Benjie and Beau perish -- and the Doc succumbs to a last heart attack. Uneven --perhaps -- but it has moments of unusual storytelling.
