NEW CRIMES

A decidedly eccentric collection compiled by the co-owner of Murder One, a mystery bookshop in London. Among his fancies: Sara Paretsky's frequently reprinted ""The Pietro Andromache,"" in which V.I Warshawski solves the case of the twice-stolen statue; James Crumley's ""The Heavy,"" a name-dropping tour de force about a stuntman turned ""heavy""; a short-short, ""Exit,"" by Andrew Vachss that packs more punch in two pages than whole books do in 300; a sly le CarrÉ vignette, ""George Smiley Goes Home""; a dreadful gimmick entitled ""Youdunnit"" from Peter Lovesey; a twist on a custody case by Michael Z. Lewin (""At Home""); a stylishly dated (1953) Cornell Woolrich story, ""The Hunted""; a longish, dry interview with Patricia Highsmith; and an article by John Conquest on ""The Making of Trouble is Their Business,"" which includes checklists of ethnic detectives, homosexual ones, wounded heroes and women as sleuths. Also included is fiction by Margaret Yorke, Bill Pronzini (can an anthology be done without him?), Liza Cody, Robert Barnard, and ten others. Editor Jakubowski plans on making this an annual event, one hopes with a wiser selection next time.
