As a guide for the mobile handicapped, this is, like Lily Bruch's Access (p. 542), long overdue. Atwater evaluates restaurants and cultural activities in eight American cities with an eye on the special requirements of wheelchairs--curb cuts, hotel-door widths, taxicab adjustments, etc. Honolulu gets high marks for its many accommodating features; New York, too important to exclude, nonetheless emerges as one of the least progressive. Also included: San Antonio, Chicago, San Diego, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. Suggested minitours for each city are also indicated along with travel and access information--when advance notice is needed, where additional help will be necessary. And for each city, there's a resident adviser to call as well as a wheelchair repair center.
