A photo-profile of a multiply-handicapped kindergartner, as narrated by her friend, a little Oriental girl who appears frequently in the photos and appears to be a good friend indeed. As shown, the other children in the class also take a friendly and natural interest in Leslie, who is seriously deficient in sight, hearing, and muscular flexibility but has become an outstanding reader--thanks largely, according to an appended note, to a special school program begun at age one. Besides pointing up the value of such publicly-funded programs, the book could help establish an accepting, matter-of-fact tone in other classrooms with ""mainstreamed"" special children.
