From the author of All About Words: An Adult Approach to Vocabulary Building (1966. p. 356), etymologies presented in easy-to-remember contexts and just the right light tone. Moving from simpler to more complex within each chapter, he groups geographical words (china, denim--from serge de Nimes). popular contributors (Boycott, Burnsides-to-sideburns). ""slanguage,"" and numeral coinages; money talks (e.g. pecuniary), and animals have their say. At the same time, recurrent prefixes and suffixes are introduced and, of necessity, repeated -- which may make this more useful in the classroom as a sprightly alternative to drilling.
