egenerative small story (or novella) spends a month with Joanna, from Athens, on an inaccessible island where she goes on holiday to paint. For the first time she escapes from the past-- the execution of her mother during the war and the subsequent living death- her father's, her brother's, her own. On her first day she salvages a wretched donkey from the owner who has brutalized him; she buys salve for is sores and a hat for his head. And, eventually, in his healing lies hers, as well as her release to become an artist.... Not mawkish, but certainly smudged with sentiment which May Sarton's readers may find attractive and appropriate as the Christmas season approaches.
