Substituting for a plot in this informative well written survey of aspects of life on the Iowa prairie in 1854, are a group of episodes centered around young Hannah and her family. How the family prepared for the long Iowa winter; descriptions of house raising, spinning and sugaring off; the construction of the saw, flour and woolen mills are among the historical items imparted. Warm human interest anecdotes include Hannah's schooldays, her brave shopping expedition and her sorry attempt to scrub the cabin floor. Recommended supplementary reading for school children studying pioneer life. But no Wilder competitor.
