THE HOUSE IN NO END HOLLOW

This isn't as good a book as Honey Jane -- but at that it is well above average and a distinct contribution to the American background. A story of today in the Kentucky mountains, of the mission school and the efforts of the people to hold it together, and particularly the story of Becky, and her 14-year old sense of responsibility for her younger brother and sister and the home they had kept against odds. The story is good; the details about the life and the point of view of the mountaineers is convincing and enlightening. But the dialogue is uneven, sometimes using dialect, sometimes not, and there is a feeling that the story is made second to the facts about the life, in too earnest an endeavor to show these people as they are.
