KIRKUS REVIEW

An excellent selection of stories of all periods of American history, showing (not too obtrusively) the part youth has played in the growth of the country. Some short stories, some skillfully handled sections from books, a few poems -- against the chronological background of Colonial America, the Revolution, the pioneer period, the Civil War, westward expansion, on into the 20th century. The contributors number some of the best known names in American illerature- juvenile and adult,- the Benets, Mark Twain, Caroline Snedeker, Joseph Abbott, Hamlin Garland, Eugene Field, James Otis, Mary E. Wilkins, Walt Whitman, and many others.
