From two good books- one about the Soapbox Derby (A Race for Bill- 1951, p.323) one about -H (Challenge to Babs 1952, p.505) this author turns to a rather ordinary mystery. It hinges on the search of the jewels of a wealthy old maid who is soured on life because her mother had run off with a man who jilted her. Thirteen year old Dick, who faces a hard summer because his family has just gone bankrupt, and his friend Tom stumble on the mystery when they explore Miss Leighton's old house and tangle with a marauder. He turns out to be a cousin of Miss Leighton's recreant father in search of the jewels. The boys catch him, get their reward and Dick's family problems are solved. Far-fetched, but it's the kind of escapism this age group and eleven year olds will go for.
