A RACE FOR BILL

Publisher: Nelson

A soap box derby story and a swell one, even if the reluctant hero comes off winner at every final test. Bill is a very real kid from first to last, and the situations carry the ring of truth. An old and deep rooted fear proved a terrific hurdle to take, so the winning of the race, first in Hillsdale, then in Akron, was a winning over something bigger than other boy contestants, a winning to self confidence he had lacked at the start. He had a lot of set-backs, but his friends, his family, and his basic character carried him through. Good community story, with mounting tensions and sound buildup to a climax. The factual background of the building of the soap box car and the races is fresh and new.
