A CAGE OF SPINES

Among the more interesting of our contemporary women poets is May Swenson whose verse is seen often in current periodicals. She combines a woman's lyric gift with a colorful sense of metaphor and an original angle of vision that puts her in -- or near -- the best tradition of women poets. Her poems have charm, insight and a concrete perception so acute that it often touches on the metaphysical. If she has any model it must have been Marianne Moore. But while her verses are not so finely cut or distinguished as Miss Moore's, they are much more easily read, having substance without so much obscurity. Many meters and rhythms are tried out and, if she continues to develop -- her talent is not yet fixed --she will be remembered for a small body of choice poems.
