THE STARS AND STRIPES: The Story of a Paper for Joe

Pub Date: Feb. 14th, 1945
Publisher: Farrar & Rinehart

The authors of Air Gunners now give us a biography of the paper for Joe -- as it began, and carried on (the English edition -- with only incidental data on the other editions) -- and as it accomplished its ""soldiers first"" aim and summarily disposed of brass hat and censor interference and kept civilians out of the picture. Here we follow its set up in London, with the cooperation of the staid and stately Times which gave it house room; here were the country, weekly editions; the combat reporting during and after the invasion; the characters of the staff; the brush-ups with authority; errata and complaints, and so on. In the vernacular -- and too ostensibly boys will be boys featuring of the authors. Primarily of interest to Stars & Stripes men.
