Garden, reads the sign, and little Jim was determined to make it a reality. With seed packets and tools he plants beans and carrots and cabbages only to have it all destroyed by a flock of chickens. Jim's disappointment is offset by his neighbor's strange to the one remaining cabbage plant. At first suspiciously and then with increasing enthusiasm, Jim tends his cabbage, watching it offer protection to a toad and a rabbit and seeing it grow from day to day. It is a proud little boy who lifts the huge plant out of the ground and presents it to his family who top off the achievement by reacting with shack and admiration. All children who have ever suffered the disappointment of a lying project -- especially those who have found a suitable substitute-will understand Jim's experience and appreciate its satisfying conclusion. Truly childlike in spirit and form.
