NEW DESIGNS FOR SMALL PROPERTIES

By

Pub Date: March 9th, 1947
Publisher: Macmillan

New revision of Designs for Small Properties, published 20 years ago when the philosophy of simple planning and execution was news. Text has been revised, new material added, all new illustrations (missing as of this writing and essential to value of book). The text seems, in reading, to be theoretical, with insufficient concrete material in the way of working lists of trees, shrubs, etc. But publishers promise 105 line drawings, accompanying extensive captions, to bring the theory into practical application. He stresses the importance of planning house and grounds jointly, lays great emphasis on line and form, fitness to setting (size of lot, city, suburban, semi-rural), land gradings (uphill, downhill, side hill). He discusses basic principles of garden design, use of trees, hedges, shrubs and a flower area where density, texture and color must be considered. A book for students of landscape design rather than for laymen.
