In this second installment in a most charming chapter-book series, Eliza once more walks through the magical fairy door for more adventures.
Eliza should be cleaning her room, but daydreams of fairies fill her head, and when she hears a strange noise from the tiny door under the stairs, she opens it—and is magically whisked through, though this time she finds herself in Goblin Valley. The hobgoblins, small creatures with bumpy green skin and big pointy ears, are agents of joyful chaos, riding wrens through the air, standing on their heads, and pranking one another and Eliza. Responsible Eliza realizes that she still needs to clean her room, but the hobgoblins are on it! Despite her protests, a horde follows her home, wreaking havoc until her room looks even worse than it did before. McDonald again sends her protagonist on a delightful journey enlivened by delectable turns of phrase, character names, and exclamations (“Potato blossoms!” “Peaches and crumbs!”). Wen’s well-placed, luminous illustrations are at their best depicting riotous scenes of the well-meaning but mischievous hobgoblins upending tranquil domestic scenes; readers will eagerly follow Eliza wherever her magical door takes her next. Eliza presents East Asian.
More enchanting fun.
