Button’s a little late, but no matter: It catches up to Feathers, String, Rings, Springs, Wheely Things and more, all in place for Picture Day. Someone’s missing, though—who? “GLUE!” McDonald’s rhythmic, minimalist text leaves lots of room for Tillotson’s bright, extravagant collages, which, craft material by craft material, slowly take on the look of art-class projects, with clothespin “bodies,” button “eyes” and Easter-grass “hair.” Once Glue arrives—“Whew”—it gets to work, and a spectacular double-gatefold reveals the whole class, proudly lined up for their picture. The slowly building whimsy will fascinate young readers, who will pore over every creation and delight in the eclecticism of this cheerily oddball assemblage. A subtle, joyful celebration of non-prescriptive art. (Picture book. 5-8)
