STENCILING

Stenciling, that colonial substitute for imported wallpaper, is revived here as a decorative scheme applicable throughout the house. Although a paper bag, scissors, and paint can accomplish the job, Parry enumerates progressive refinements and advanced techniques, and provides endless sources for pattern ideas--houseplant leaves, grocery store labels, building gargoyles, kitchen utensils, headstones, textiles already in the room. She recommends a start on paper, then more ambitious efforts--chair backs, shades, walls, file cabinets, ceilings (twisty)--and of course the ubiquitous T-shift. As pictured, most in black and white, her projects are too busy for some tastes but individuals can cut down on the cut-outs and still benefit from her designing ways.
