When her friend goes missing in upstate New York, a woman with a troubled history resolves to look for her despite all the wounds her search opens.
One day, hardworking Zoe March, who’s just completed the latest season of her successful true-crime podcast, prepares to begin another, this one focusing on her old friend Olivia Cruz. The next day she’s vanished: Only Wendy Simon, her producer, shows up for their scheduled meeting with Olivia. Wendy seems unconcerned, and the most urgent concern of Dylan Sanders, a personal trainer intent on making his own mark as a fitness influencer, is clearly that the Scarlet Falls PD thinks he had something to do with his wife’s disappearance. So Olivia takes on the job of searching for her friend. She’s the perfect choice, since she herself was kidnapped and held captive three years ago in a PR stunt her agent didn’t bother to let her in on. Along the way, Olivia gets word that her niece, social media marketer Nicki Cruz, has also disappeared. Not only is that news untrue, but Nicki demands to join the search for Zoe. The two soon decide that the most likely suspects to have plotted an abduction are those close to Jennifer Hamilton or Evan Brown, the two long-dead victims Zoe had been researching as possible subjects for future seasons of You Won’t Believe This. Leigh keeps the pot boiling with constant attacks, revelations, and other mayhem, like the drugging of Nicki during her first meeting with Cody Vass, an investment banker she connected with online.
