This is the story of Isabella and Beatrice d'Este, told with all the lush trimmings of the glitter of their lives in 15th century Italy. The background of the Italian Renaissance, the personalities of the period, the Borgias, Leonardo de Vinci and others, make this a time teeming with interest, so that more sober statement of fact sounds at times like the dreams of a vivid imagination. The ceremonial upbringing, the training for grave responsibilities of their positions, their colorful marriages, their influence on the art movements of their day all help humanize the period in which they lived. The book should be an easy and pleasant assignment in supplementary reading for history or art.
