THE FORK IN THE TRAIL by Merlin Ames

THE FORK IN THE TRAIL

By

Publisher: McKay

Lumbering and stump farm country of Wisconsin holds excitement and promise in store for Sandy Baxter of Kansas. With his pal he explores the countryside, investigating various propositions which would make High School possible. They pick blueberries, out ash poles, trap, help with sugaring; they pick up clues and odd bits of information that had bearing on the mystery of the disappearance of the Baxter and Atwater logs. And, with the aid of a teacher and friend, they achieve some important goals. The author has handled new terrain, new problems of expanding America, and written a lot of story with novel characterizations. Good pictures by Henry Pitz, and excellent format, though the wide margins and extra leading make for bulking a book into a bigger book than the text warrants -- a factor that will suggest a younger audience to some wary early teen agers who would like the story immensely.
