An historical overall of Yellowstone, this is based on primary source material and with considerable care retraces the picturesque past of a picturesque region. Isolated and inaccessible, Yellowstone's earliest discoverers- particularly John Colter- left evidence of only dubious value, and it is only in 1869 and 1870 with the Folsom-Cook exploration, and the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition that its discovery was definite. The creation of Yellowstone National Park which followed, and the last round-up of cattle, the migration of the Indians- not without bloodshed. From its early days there is material on the Indians, on the activities and visitations of the trappers, on the legendary Jim Bridger- and more currently there is the opening up of travel and transportation, the question of conservation, the general administration and the National Park Service...
