CEZANNE

For the text alone, this is outstanding in this series. Add to that 50 fine reproductions which give us Cezanne in all his phases. Meyer Schapiro, in his penetrating analysis of Cezanne's complexities, in his interpretation of the man's development as an artist, in his extraordinary elucidation of his methods and techniques, has done perhaps the outstanding study of a writing and critical career. Too often the text is slighted in a portfolio of painting reproductions. This text merits the reader's attention, if appreciation of the paintings is to be as rich as it may be.
