VILLA ON THE SHORE

One begins to suspect that Michael Butterworth is like Anthony Gilbert -- a lady ladies' writer -- for the soothingly dreadful events which take place at the Villa Gaspari (Italy) strain the heart rather than tax the mind of Natasha, who comes there to work for the prominent author Nathan. Her predecessor fell out the window. Might she also die? The highly decorative story glides along in an espresso fashion but you can almost hear the taped Mantovani.
