MARIA by Michael De Capite

MARIA

By

Publisher: John Day

A sombre, authentic picture of three generations of immigrants, of adjustment, absorption, of conflict between the old and the new. Maria is a second generation Italian immigrant, whose isolation in colonies of the foreign born has kept her in ignorance of the country's language, customs and the significance of the life around her. She marries ambitious Domonic, follows his enterprises with innocent lack of comprehension of the meaning of bootlegging and stock market manipulation, until the crash and his subsequent borrowing, drives him from home, deserting Maria and leaving her to care for their children and assorted relatives. A rather grim picture of an aspect of American life of which too little is generally known, -- but not light reading.
