Bob Eddison, American Indian partner of antiquarian Dave Cannon (cf. the earlier books), is in England hoping to marry the girl he fell in love with a year ago and, while waiting for her, he buys a picture coveted by a man with a collection of old Dutch masters. The picture goes up every day in both value and danger and reveals ultimately why its former new-rich proud possessor had been killed. A continuity which also appreciates in its steady and eminently pleasant fashion.
