The formula calls for a sleepy English village, decaying local gentry clinging to past privileges, a visiting young American like rare bookman David Cannon, a retired general's daughter for him to fall in love with, a pub what is a pub, and the contrived/connived solution for the violent death of an inconsequential victim.
