THE KINGFISHER ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ANIMALS

By

Pub Date: Nov. 1st, 1992
Publisher: Kingfisher

Subtitled From Aardvark to Zorille and 2,000 Other Animals, listed under their common names, with nearly 1,000 colored drawings and photos--a revised and enlarged version of Chinery's Dictionary of Animals (1984). While English and European species predominate here, an attempt is made to provide worldwide coverage. There are brief facts on size, appearance, range, behavior, and scientific classification; an index gives access by common and scientific names but provides few cross references (e.g., none from ""bat"" to specific bats such as ""flying foxes"" or ""vampire bats""). Some entries are also suspect (""400 million prairie dogs might be found in a single colony""). A bit limited for reference use, since classification keys, range maps, and information on endangered species are all lacking; but browsers will enjoy this first look at zanders, zebus and zorilles.
