MINDY LINDY MAY SURPRISE

A peppy little novel featuring feisty Dino Lucchesi who parlays a stableboy start into ownership of Mindy Lindy, a fast bay whose bad knees guarantee that she will not be claimed in a claiming race. After a stint in the Army, Dino again returns to the bush race racket, with Mindy and a workhorse called Josie. And he runs into one Connors, a western heel who manages, during the course of the book to break Dino's hand; try to ring in a killer horse for Dino to ride during a thousand dollar bet; give him a gang beating; dope his horse and almost kill Pappy Bull, Dino's Indian friend. All of which is taken as very much the course of things by Dino and the swinging tribe of Indians who take up his cause and who can doctor up a horse and ring in a ringer with the best of them. Aqueduct officials would shy away in horror at the off-track shenanigans here but this is sticks country, at a lively pace.
