CAT ON THE HILL

In a story told by a ship’s cat now relegated to shore because his skipper is too old to care for him, Foreman’s signature, blue-dominant palette portrays the cat’s existence through three seasons: summer, autumn, and winter. Perched on a hill above the harbor, the cat watches the fishing boats, avoids the pesky gulls and barking dog, and each evening goes to town to find something to eat—until the rough, greedy town cats chase him off. When the days get as cold as the night, the little town seems different with singing, cooking, and shops full of light. As snow falls, a fisher boy, who often throws the cat a fish, spreads straw on the ground and feeds the cat, horse, donkey, and dog: “My friends and I sit warm on our hill between all the stars of Heaven and Earth.” Adults who notice the visual clues of light-trimmed trees and a glimpse of Santa may expect a Nativity-type ending instead of a Christmas-spirited allegory. Large attractive illustrations give the slight tale substance but the nuance, message, and cat’s voice don’t elicit child appeal. (Picture book. 4-7)
