This one volume history of the North American Indian from the 17th century to Wounded Knee was prepared for English readers and despite the ""documentary organization"" it offers little that is new to Americans. Gibson deals in turn with major geographical groups -- the New England Indians, the Civilized Tribes of the Southeast, and Plains Indians and the Apaches, Nez Perce and Utes of the West. The culture and social organization of each is briefly described, but this is principally an account of the Indian wars with descriptions of eyewitnesses on both sides, and major lndian groups which were not involved in wars with Anglo-American settlers are omitted.
