LE MANS: Twice Around the Clock

Another kind of pit and pendulum squeaker takes a fast spin around the racing circuit at Le Mans where Ian Munro, a reserve driver, hopes to be behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DB 3 for the first time. Mr. Gibson, without losing any of the excitement here, also makes sure that the reader understands that this dangerous game depends on practice, physical fitness, judgment and caution as well as flair. The story itself follows the British team to the track where they have an initial setback-- one of their cars is ditched, and where Ian gets to drive only as a replacement. The race itself is preceded by a good deal of procedural routine and information, while the story picks up speed during the 24 hour contest which clocks up to 7000 revs.
