ADMIRAL BYRD OF ANTARCTICA by Michael Gladys

ADMIRAL BYRD OF ANTARCTICA

This biography of Admiral Byrd covers the major accomplishments of the explorer from his birth to his recent death. His childish rebelliousness, his tour of the world as a young man, his pioneering in the world of flight, and his crowning accomplishments in exploring the South Pole are dramatized effectively. Michael Gladys makes a successful attempt to integrate his portrait of Byrd, the individual, with Byrd, the historical figure, evoking a portrait of a whole, functioning individual. More dramatically elaborate than the Putnam biography, and somewhat more sentimental.
