KIRKUS REVIEW

A literate, polished style, subtle humor (very British), characters on the fantastic side, distinguish this from formula mystery-adventure tales. CID Appleby, castaway with five others after their boat is torpedoed, can't get his teeth into the murder of one of their group. Their island turns out to have a hotel and non-digging archaeologists on it, and things, including a tornado, arson, bombing, submarines, begin to happen. For fanciers.
