The ugly faces of racial tension underline the murder in this mystery after white Gene Hardin head of the Freeborn Knights, clashes with black Nathan Cox, leader of ""The Collectors,"" a black militant organization aiming to get its due. Hardin is subsequently killed and Cox is collected by police trying to cover up their own involvement (a bootlegging set-up with Hardin). But the real victim is black lawyer Roy Tilson, despised by both groups and unsure of his own commitment. Even if you're way ahead to begin with, you'll stay with it.
