A prison chaplain risks everything for the woman he loves.

John Jordan, former police officer and recovering alcoholic, has loved Anna Taunton for a long time. Anna, eight months pregnant, is in the middle of divorcing her husband, lawyer Chris Taunton, to marry John when Chris is shot and wounded and she’s kidnapped. John asks his police chief father to hide Chris and claim he’s died while John attempts to rescue Anna. Her kidnapper tells John that to secure her release, he must find a way to break an unnamed prisoner out of the Florida prison where he works as a chaplain. The new warden doesn’t like John, and Rachel Peterson, the new inspector general of the Department of Corrections, is looking into his involvement in the death of the psych specialist Hahn Ling—an investigation that could bring criminal charges against him. When the kidnappers finally reveal the name of the prisoner they want him to free, John has precious little time to come up with a plan. Getting the man out of prison is the easy part. Everything falls apart after the initial escape, leaving John and Anna on the run from a vicious psychopath and prison personnel desperate to cover up their own crimes.

John’s ninth appearance (Blood Money, 2015, etc.) uses Lister’s experiences as a prison chaplain to bring authenticity to the tense story of a man forced to make decisions that go against his deeply held beliefs.
