A novel of an extremely real and pathetically poor Irish family, struggling to exist in Belfast. They force the old mother away from her tiny country cottage so that they may have her pension, and when the move kills her, they return to the cottage to live and tend the three acres. A thoroughly unhappy book but its poignant, brooding quality grips you. Particularly for the Catholic audience.
