BREAKFAST, BOOKS, & DREAMS

Twenty small verses in an oversize format, but appropriately illustrated with prim, orderly, bronze-colored etchings, take two children (separately and together) from the beginning to the end of an ordinary day--specifically, from a waking dream to another dream that night. Many of the entries are mild, placid rhymes--by William Cole, Jane Yolen, and others--about such everyday doings as fighting over TV, playing with food at the dinner table, or procrastinating over homework. Also included are Russell Hoban's familiar ""Egg Thoughts,"" a lively rhyme for recess by Dennis Lee, and a nice picture of classroom boredom by Kenneth Gangemi. Unexciting overall, but comfortably familiar and visually pleasing.
