Pewley, otherwise known as Laurence or Flo, the twelfth juror, doesn't turn up one day during the continuing trial of a vice racketeer. He can't. He's dead. Although time and the pleasant collaboration of police officers Nick and Clare will prove that his demise had nothing to do with the case and that he was a very queer fellow under his several wigs. Underwood keeps deflecting the reader's suspicions and suppositions with the established, traditional skills at his command. They serve him well.
