PIPPIN AND POD

'Shall we go back to Mommy now?' said Pod""--this after the two little mice have visited the market, a construction site, and the playground. ""'No, she's still shopping,' said Pippin. 'Let's go and play by the pond.' So off they went. . ,"" to get lost in the park before finding their mother at last. ""And how happy she was to have found her naughty little mice!"" An aimless outing, undertaken no doubt for the sake of Cartlidge's dainty line and watercolor views of ""actual places in Hampstead, London"" (publisher's note). But the writing only brings out the pictures' weak spots and makes the whole too cutesy to get by.
