A MOUSE'S DIARY by Michelle Cartlidge

A MOUSE'S DIARY

Two weeks of this dainty (English) mouse's diary might seem like one, arbitrary week too much of a mere conceit--without shape or continuity or point. As a diary of daily doings, on the other hand, it could as well go on forever. And there might be the appeal, to some youngsters, of a more delicate and fanciful, Richard-Starry-like romp in the combination of a slightly capricious text (at Monday's ballet class, ""I had to stop and change my ballet shoes because they were on the wrong feet""; ""On Sunday mornings my parents like reading the newspapers, so we have to keep out of their way"") and minutely detailed pictures, full-up with activity. It's less cloying, overall, than Cartlidge's The Bears' Bazaar and (especially) Teddy Trucks--and though a trifle, a diverting one. Some children might even latch onto the diary idea for themselves.
