Kipper—a dog—decides to clean out his basket, discarding his chewed-up bone and ball and his smelly blanket, with the result that he no longer finds the basket comfortable. He goes in search of a new bed, but none of the beds of the other animals suits. After inadvertently rousing a badger in its set, Kipper is so frightened that he runs home and hides under ``his lovely old smelly blanket'' and falls asleep in his own basket after all. Appealing, clear watercolor illustrations with plenty of white space make this suitable for lap-reading or a picture book crowd. (Fiction. 2-5)
