Civil War shenanigans. Southern belle Marcy Chastain is betrothed to rich, tiresome Armand Ortega--but her heart belongs to the Yankee who kissed her at a ball in Washington City the night before they fired on Fort Sumter. Now New Orleans has been captured and the Yankee, Major John Farrell, is billeted chez Marcy. Her cousin Gene (who holds the mortgage on the family plantation) blackmails her into spying on the Major to find out when Grant will attack Vicksburg. Marcy is tormented--if he sees that she is a spy, will he hate her? But she hardly has time to find out, since Armand is murdered, yellow fever breaks out, and the beloved mixed-blood baby-child of Marcy's dead brother is about to be sold! Somehow Marcy must escape with baby Brule to her ancestral plantation Nine Oaks. . . but someone is trying to kill her on the way. Naturally. Busy, busy--but strangely infected with a severe case of the bayou blahs.
