As a great admirer of Sigrid Undset, novelist, I am disappointed in her shortcomings as a spinner of tales for young people. She has an oddly round-about-Robin-Hood-barn way of telling what, in the last analysis, is a fairly simple story. The fact of its being set in the 13th century seems to me to demand simplicity rather than the reverse in recounting the adventures of a trio of lads who played games based on their national heroes and came a cropper. They took refuge in the maintain summer farmhouse, and stumbled into real adventure, but proved their true courage and earned the right to serve their young king.
