MY PUPPY

With only ""one quarter, two dimes, two nickles, and eight pennies,"" ""I"" couldn't buy any of the pets at the pet shop and so settled for a dog leash instead. ""I began to pretend there was a puppy at the end of my leash""--and proved good enough at the game to win a ""special prize"" at the local dog show. The prize is a card that reads ""This coupon entitles the bearer to one puppy at the pet store,"" Fishman's black-line drawings, though no more substantial than the text, have a quirky look that brings out the snap in the story. No prize, but it might show.
