KIRKUS REVIEW

Some worthwhile selections--from Forbes' Johnny Tremain, the Benets' Book of Americans, Wibberley's Gales of Spring--packaged together with a few schoolbook clunkers we'd rather forget--such as Harriet Prescott Spofford's declamatory ""How We Became a Nation""--and with unevenly informative essays by Luckhardt that range from a look at the origins of Yankee Doodle to a dull rundown of the lives of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Overall, a weak collection, geared to teachers desperate for some undemanding bicentennial classroom reading.
