In this her 13th book, Miss Lawrence employs the first person to tell the story of a young girl who compromises between her old traditions and the missile age. Despite her proximity to Palmetto Point, Florida, where rockets and missiles dominate, Kit's life is centered in the orange grove of Somewhat Island where she and Gramps live. At school she rejects the Missile Kids and chooses her friends among the Early Settlers. And after graduation Kit retains her hostility even through a close friendship with a male member of the enemy camp and a job at Moon Manor. Like Gramps, Kit cannot rationalize the act of shooting millions of dollars to the moon. This attitude changes however because of further relationship with missile kids, and a recognition between the similarity of her own paintings and the artistic films taken from rockets. The deciding factor in bringing Kit 'round occurs during a crisis when the Missile Kids mobilize in an effort to save the orange crop of Somewhat Island from frost. A readable novel for teenage girls, especially those who have followed Miss Lawrence's earlier books with interest.
