A gay, happy butter-and-eggs story of farm life, and a little girl's cheerup campaign for a hard working family in Pennsylvania. Vicky's cousins and their mother must work hard to meet the payments on the mortgage. They bake, tend the animals, churn, and even make their own clothes, some from sacking. When Vicky from the city spends a year on the farm, she finds she is useless at first but feels that fun and play are necessary, too. How she relaxes a household of workers and eventually is instrumental in paying off the mortgage by renovating a historical set of buildings, makes an implausible but delightful story. Wonderful sketches by Susanne Suba provide a delicate gaiety and whimsicality.
